twenty day mark

May 23, 2008

I went to another speaker-type of event yesterday morning to take photos. It was a discussion about the “cow parade”.  This Spanish artist had an epiphany one day to paint cows and place them around the southern coast (like the dinosaurs you see in Pittsburgh).  It was a fun little event and I got a free coffee and baguette (I could have received my very own miniature cow to paint, but I walked by the table and didn’t even see them).

After the internship my coworkers drove me to the Plaza Mayor of Madrid (close to my apartment building).  It’s a pretty plaza, popular among the starving artists, tourists, and the petty thieves. “ The Plaza Mayor has been the scene of multitudinous events: markets, bullfights, soccer games, public executions, and, during the Spanish Inquisition, "autos de fe" against supposed heretics and the executions of those condemned to death”. My coworkers are very nice to me, not condescending at all. However, I do get times where I wish I could understand their slang and jokes.  I’m going to bring my ipod one day so they can jimmy jack some Castellano music for me. It’s refreshing to meet people who are actually native of Spain.

My apartment-mate Joe, two other students, and I had this great idea to go to Morocco today but the plan fell through -mostly because no one committed to the plan.  It wasn’t until last night that we discovered that the earliest bus leaves at 10 a.m. And since it is about a 7 hour bus ride plus a 2.5 hour ferry ride, we gave up. Maybe I’ll just fly there later?

I’m on a mission today to find a book of short stories in Spanish.  This way, if I get completely lost about a part of the story, it won’t be so bad because soon enough I’ll be moving on…

Some useless thoughts:

1. I have noticed that the clothes here are much slimmer/more modest

-example: the bras are not SUPER padded, they’re reasonable and small

2. Cars are tiny! The “minivans” here are a joke.

3. Everyone at my internship has: a Nikon and a MacBook. Coincidence?

You can look at the agency’s photos here: http://www.fotodeportiva.com/

It might take awhile to upload, so be patient!

(P.S. jimmy jack is not real slang – I made that up).
